ZALARAPA PLANS TO PROTEST OVER ALLEGED NEGLECT BY GOVERNMENT AND THEIR FORMER EMPLOYERS

By Michael Kaluba

The Zambia Local Authorities Retirees and Pensioners Association-ZALARAPA have disclosed plans to hold a peaceful protest next month over their alleged neglect by government and their former employers.

Association Secretary Donald Mangimela says the elderly members and retirees have decided to speak out because the local authorities that employed them are not fulfilling their mandate to pay them their benefits and have left them with no source of income to fend for themselves.

In an interview with Phoenix News, Mr. Mangimela also alleges that the Kitwe City Council has failed to provide them with residential and commercial farm plots as promised or fulfill an alternative to provide them with grave sites for family for free which has not come to fruition.

And Mr. Mangimela has challenged government to consider retirees in various empowerment initiatives being rolled out in the country including at the black mountain and also to add them to beneficiaries of the social cash transfer as most retirees have no stable source of income.
