WORLD BANK APPROVES PROJECT

The World Bank has approved an extension of one year for the implementation of the Eastern and Southern Africa Higher Education Centres of Excellence -ACE II-project.

Higher Education Permanent Secretary Kayula Siame says the extension follows a request by her Ministry.

Ms. Kayula says the extension of the project period will give the two centers, one of which is at the University of Zambia -UNZA- and the other at Copperbelt University -CBU-, an opportunity to ensure all milestones are achieved timely.

She states that government is committed to supporting the two centers whose creation at the two universities will now be completed on December 31st, 2023.

Ms. Kayula was speaking during the National Steering Committee Monitoring visit for the ACE II-project in Lusaka.

At UNZA, the centre of excellence that is being created is in Infectious Diseases for Humans and Animals-ACEIDHA- while the one at CBU is in Sustainable Mining-ACESM.

Implementation of the ACE II project whose launch was in 2016, was hindered for almost two years from 2018, before the World Bank could approve an extension of one year.
