Works Minister Chalikosa wants accountability in pontoon operations

Minister of Works and Supply Sylvia Chalikosa has called for a proper and accountable management of the operations of pontoons. She said this when she inspected pontoons placed at various ferry points in Chavuma and Zambezi Districts of North-Western Province.Ms Chalikosa was inspecting the pontoons in the province to get first-hand information on the state and operations of the pontoons. She said this will enable government to give correct and factual responses to anyone who may need to know about the operations of the pontoons.Ms Chalikosa says the tour was necessitated following several questions raised by lawmakers relating to the operations and management of pontoons.Meanwhile, Engineering Services Corporation (ESCO) managing director, Patrick Nyirenda informed the minister that the corporation is in the process of realigning the mechanical parameters of pontoons to align each pontoon with its operation requirements such as traffic and load.Nyirenda said the pontoon at Chavuma is not cost effective because it is using engines that are bigger than the workload it is subjected to as a result spending more fuel. And Chavuma District Commissioner, Benjamin Mufunga requested the minister to consider buying flood lamps for the pontoons to enable the pontoon to function even at night especially when there is an emergency.ZANIS Post Views: 4
