WOMEN IN POLITICS EXCHANGE IDEAS

By Patricia Banda

Local Government Gender Equality Committee Chairperson Rashida Mulenga has urged the local Government Service Commission to ensure it promotes and upgrades more deserving women to Principal Officer level.

Ms. Mulenga who is also Kalulushi Mayor says this will contribute to the realisation of sustainable Development Goal Number five, where rights of women at all levels of decision making are recognised.

And Ms. Mulenga has appealed to the Electoral Commission of Zambia -ECZ- to consider reducing nomination fees to enable more women to participate in the 2021 general Election once they are adopted by their political parties.

She was speaking in an interview with ZNBC news in Lusaka after she opened the first annual meeting of women in Local Government, which drew participants from women in the Local Government Association and various political parties.

Ms Mulenga also said there is need to address the issue of violence because it has potential to scare women from participating in politics.

And Roma ward 17 Councillor Chilando Chitangala observed that some women are scared to compete for political positions because some political parties are hostile.

Meanwhile, Sheba Kashina, who is Local Government Gender Equality Committee Deputy Chairperson and UPND Lukulu councillor said she is in support of more women being appointed in decision making positions.

And Chilanga District Council Chairperson Annie Brown thanked President Edgar Lungu for recognising women as partners in national development.
