Women embark on cassava growing

The Zambia Federation Associations of Women in Business have embarked on a cassava seed growing program aimed at empowering women in Zambia.
The cassava cluster program was launched in 2011 by the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa-COMESA.
Zambia Federation associations of women in Business chief executive officer Maureen Sumbwe says women should contribute to the commercialization of cassava as a cash crop.
She says so far 150 women have been trained in cassava seed multiplication at the mount Makulu research center in Lusaka.
Ms. Sumbwe believes the program will create the job opportunities along the value chain.
And Charity Nyirongo, a Cassava grower in Chongwe  says Cassava being the climate change resilient tuber makes it easy to maintain.
Ms. Nyirongo says she has been empowered and has urged more women to venture into the programme.
