WATER UTILITY FIRMS WARNED

By Paul Shalala:

Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection Minister Mike Mposha has warned water utilities against abusing company resources to appease politicians.

Mr. Mposha says in the past, utilities were handing over company vehicles to politicians in order for them to be favored.

Speaking when he unveiled the boards for Nkana, Kafubu and Mulonga Water and Sanitation Companies in Ndola this morning, Mr. Mposha also warned that he will not entertain any audit queries by the utilities.

He said some of the queries are avoidable if management does its job well.

The Water Development Minister directed the boards to provide leadership and ensure that audit queries are avoided.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mposha has revealed that 72 percent of Zambians have access to water while 52 percent have access to sanitation services.

He said the government wants to ensure that the numbers rise to 100 percent by 2030 so that everyone has universal access to water and sanitation.

Mr. Mposha added that in this year’s National Budget, the allocation for water and sanitation has been increased by nine percent in order to help increase access for all.
