WATER SUPPLY CRITICAL -NAKACHINDA

By Patricia Banda

Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection Minister Raphael Nakachinda is concerned that utility companies take long to provide water services to most settlements.

Mr. Nakachinda says this is why people resort to drilling water boreholes whose water may not be safe to drink.

The Minister says he wants to take up the challenge and engage the Ministry of Land or Local Government on how best to ensure that before communities settle on any piece of land, the water utility companies service the land with water.

Mr. Nakachinda was speaking today when he visited National Water Supply and Sanitation Council -NWASCO- offices in Lusaka to acquaint himself with its operations.

He explained that NWASCO, as a regulator, is critical in water supply to ensure that Zambians have access to clean drinking water as enshrined in the 7th National Development Plan.

And NWASCO Director Kelvin Chitumbo disclosed that in the last six months, Government has paid off water bills for most Government institutions through debt swapping and cash payments.

This was when he made presentations about NWASCO on water sector reforms and regulations in Zambia.

Mr. Chitumbo also said there is need to repair infrastructure for water to minimise loss of revenue through leakages.
