WATER DISPUTES AFFECT DEVELOPMENT

By Michael Kaumba

Luapula Province Minister DERRICKY CHILUNDIKA says the water rights disputes on water bodies in the region have negatively affected the development of big projects in the province.

Mr CHILUNDIKA says serious investments in sectors such as mining are failing to take off in the province due to the water rights disputes which have slowed the development of hydro power projects.

He says Manganese mining has largely been restricted to small scale level and a quick and fair resolution of water rights disputes will spur development in the sector.

Speaking when Water Development and Sanitation Minister MIKE MPOSHA called on him in MANSA, Mr CHILUNDIKA said a number of investors have shown willingness to develop hydro power but the disputes have halted such plans.

And, Water Development and Sanitation Minister Mr MPOSHA said government will soon resolve the water rights disputes concerning power companies, who want to develop hydro power on water bodies in LUAPULA province.

Mr MPOSHA has since assured the people of LUAPULA that the new dawn government will resolve the issue amicably in the best interests of the people in the province.

Mr MPOSHA said he is aware that the water rights disputes have hindered development in the province and government wants to find an amicable solution to the matter.

The minister is on a familiarisation tour of water and Sanitation projects in Luapula province.
