UNION WELCOMES $150M MINING INVESTMENT

The Mine Workers Union of Zambia  has welcomed the  unveiling of a 150 million dollar investment into the Mingomba exploration and mining project by Kobold metals.

Kobold metals are using artificial intelligence to explore minerals.

Union President JOSEPH CHEWE says he is hopeful that the investment will create jobs .

Mr. CHEWE called on the government to develop a policy that will limit the use of Artificial intelligence in the extractive industry.

He says the increasing use of artificial intelligence or machines to detect and extract minerals is not only a threat to job opportunities but the existence of the unions as well.

Speaking in an interview with ZNBC news in Kitwe, Mr CHEWE  however said  the development should prompt unions in the mines to come up with innovative ways for survival purposes.

And Kitwe Businessman Augustine Mubanga has challenged tertiary Universities providing mining training to review their curriculum and suit it with the current developments  in the sector.
