UNDP building Grain storage sheds in Kazungula

(NAIS) The Government through the United Nations Development Programme -UNDP- has started the construction of two multimillion grain storage sheds in Kazungula District at a cost of 430,000 US dollars.

Southern Province Agricultural Coordinator Dr. MAX CHOOMBE says the two storage sheds are being constructed under the Strengthening Climate Resilience of Agricultural Livelihoods in Agro-Ecological Regions I and II in Zambia -SCLARA Project.

Dr. CHOOMBE explains that the grain Bulking Centers are funded by the Green Climate Fund through the United Nations Development Programme -UNPD- aimed at improving market access for farmers in Kazungula.

He noted that the two grain Bulking Centers are being constructed in Nyawa and Nguba as they are high productive areas in Kazungula district.

Dr. CHOOMBE observed that the two grain Bulking Centres will benefit 21,450 farmers both in Nyawa and Nguba areas of Chief Nyawa’s Chiefdom.

And addressing farmers, SCLARA Project Manager PARICK MUCHIMBA says the two multimillion grain storage sheds will be completed by June to ensure that farmers start benefiting from the structures.

Mr. MUCHIMBA observed that the infrastructure will be fast tracked in a bid to assist the resilience of farmers due to drought.

Meanwhile Silverline Limited Director YUSUF NOOR says his company contracted to carry out the works is putting up a multimillion grain storage shed, an ablution block, guard house, and a solar powered borehole at each site.

Mr. NOOR   expressed optimism that the project will be completed in May before the scheduled time frame set in June.
