Traders demolish own illegal structures

Martha Banda-Thirty-One Shops that were recently constructed on a road reserve at Lusaka’s COMESA Market have been demolished by the owners.

Local Government Minister GARY NKOMBO says the action follows several engagements with the traders on the illegal construction of stalls on a road reserve.

Mr. NKOMBO says 29 more shops are expected to be demolished bringing the total to sixty adding that this is to ensure no roads are blocked at the trading site.

He says the Local Authority is at a stage of engagement, but if resistance is noted there will be need to use force to bring sanity in the City.

The Minister has since commended the 31 traders for their cooperation exhibited by adhering to the earlier directive.

And Lusaka Mayor CHILANDO CHITANGALA says the affected shop owners will be allocated trading space in the recently rehabilitated City Market.

The Lusaka Mayor says there is no need for the affected shop owners to undergo interviews for the reserved stands in the Market.
