TIZ Denies Endorsing President Lungu`s Candidature Ahead Of August Polls

By Michael Kaluba

Transparency International Zambia-TIZ- President Sampa Kalungu says fabricating statements in a bid to give credence to a corruption fight that has been faltering over the last five years will continue to hinder Zambia’s progress in fighting this scourge.

And Mr. Kalungu says it is not in the remit of the organization’s mandate to endorse any political candidates especially that TIZ is a key stakeholder in the electoral process who has already raised serious concerns over Zambia’s current fight against corruption as highlighted in the 2020 Corruption Perception Index-CPI.

Mr. Kalungu says he has been made aware of a story that ran on some social media platforms yesterday 6th July 2021 purporting that Mr. Rueben Lifuka, Transparency International’s Vice-Chairperson and immediate past Chapter President, endorsed the candidature of President Edgar Lungu and commended his fight against corruption.

He explains that while Mr. Lifuka has clarified that he has not endorsed any presidential candidate nor commended president Lungu’s fight against corruption, the organization would like to reiterate its position as a non-partisan anti-corruption and good governance activist at different levels of society.

The 2020 cpi results showed a downward trend for Zambia alleging that the country has become worse in terms of corruption in each of the last five years since 2016 with the country’s score regressing prompting calls for real political will in the fight against corruption in Zambia.
