Suspension Of Issuance Of Export Permits For Day Old Chicks And Stock-Feed Likely To Negatively Affect Poultry Industry
By Balewa Zyuulu
A Senior Lecturer and Research at the University Of Zambia-UNZA- School of Veterinary Medicine Dr. Chisoni Mumba says the suspension of issuance of export permits for day-old chicks and stock-feed is likely to negatively affect the operations of the poultry industry.
Recently, the government through the Ministry of Fisheries And Livestock suspended the issuance of export permits for stock feed and day-old chicks owing to the escalating prices of the two products.
But in an interview, Dr Mumba feels the decision may in the long run affect the local production of day-old chicks as poultry farmers may be forced to reduce production because the local market cannot consume all the chicks produced.
And Dr Mumba is concerned that government has for a long time been reluctant to respond to the challenges faced by the poultry industry.
