Stakeholders propose measures to stabilise fuel prices

By Masauso Mkwayaya

Energy Expert JOHNSTONE CHIKWANDA has advised Government to continue implementing energy reforms in order to stabilise the price of fuel.

Dr. CHIKWANDA says reforms such as moving the country’s requirement of the Low Sulphur Gasoil -LSG- on the TAZAMA pipeline and the waiving of Customs Duty on fuel has in the recent past helped to stabilise the prices of fuel.

In an interview with ZNBC News, Dr. CHIKWANDA said the situation could have been worse if Government did not put in place the measures and other interventions.

In a separate interview, a Transport Economist at the Zambia Institute for Policy Analysis and Research -ZIPAR, JOHN MUTUTWA said the fuel price increase has been largely caused by external factors on the international market.

Mr. MUTUTWA said Zambia however needs to deal with economic fundamentals to strengthen the exchange rate which is also another major factor in determining the pump prices of the fuel products.

And in a another interview, Policy Monitoring and Research Center  -PMRC-  Executive Director SYDNEY MWAMBA called on Government to increase investment in bulk fuel storage facilities.
