SIKUMBA CALLS FOR MORE TOURISM INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENT

By Moombe Haamobola

Tourism Minister RODNEY SIKUMBA has stressed the need for Zambians to invest in tourism infrastructure because the government has lined up a lot of activities that will tremendously increase inflow of tourists into the country.

Mr. SIKUMBA says while the government projected to reach 1.5-million visitors into the country by the end of this year, it is clear that the target will be reached within the third quarter of this year.

He spoke at the Mosi Day of Thunder entertainment event in Livingstone.

The Minister said that whenever there is an event in Livingstone, hotels and lodges are fully booked, a sign that the city needs more lodges.

Meanwhile, Rwandan High Commissioner to Zambia AMANDIN RUGIRA says while tourism in Livingstone is developed, there is room for improvement.

Mr. RUGIRA has urged the government to consider doubling the international rates being charged at the Victoria Falls because the current fees are low.

And Livingstone Mayor CONSTANCE MULEABAI says she is happy that Livingstone is hosting events in a peaceful manner owing to an enabling environment created by government.

And Zambia Breweries, Marketing Manager MWILA MATOKA says the event is meant to promote artists to a level where they are known at an international level.
