Senegal is 15th different AFCON Winner, Zambia is ranked 8th

Following Sunday’s win over Egypt by Senegal in the African Cup of Nations, the West African country has become the 15th different country to claim the title.

Having reached the final in 2002 and 2019, Senegal are now ranked 11th in the medals category.

Runners up Egypt, are still Africa’s top country with 13 medals in total.

This was the Pharaohs’ tenth AFCON final appearance followed by Ghana who have played in the final 9 times, winning 4 of those.

While the Black Stars’ last title came 40 years ago in 1982, the West African country has been one of the continent’s most consistent countries in recent years.

Ghana has reached six semi finals (2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019) of the last seven editions of the African Cup of Nations.

While Egypt has reached the semi finals 16 times, Ghana is not far on 14.

Ghana is third in the rankings with Nigeria fourth.

The Super Eagles have only won 3 titles despite having being to the semi finals , 15 times.

Second placed Cameroon is the continent’s most efficient country in the top five.

The Indomitable Lions of Yaounde have won 5 titles from the 10 semi final appearances.

Zambia’s 1986 AFCON Squad

Ivory Coast, Algeria and DR Congo have won the trophy twice are ahead of Zambia.

Zambia is 8th having won it once in 2012 from six semi final appearances.

Nigeria and Zambia are the only two countries with six or more semi finals appearances not to have come fourth.

Zambia’s AFCON dynasty started in 1974.

Zambia came second in 1974 and 1994 while in 1982, 1990 and 1996, they came back home with a bronze medal.
