RTSA Sheds Light on Speed Cameras

Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) Executive Director Zindaba Soko brought the public up to speed with speed camera installation across the country that has started with Lusaka.

And Bus Proprietor Ishmael Kankara has pleaded for the upward adjustment of some speed limits to encourage free flow of traffic.

During a public discussion hosted at the Hilton Garden Inn on Friday evening under the theme, “Speed Cameras: Is Zambia Ready?”, Soko said compliance with road traffic rules had increased significantly since the introduction of speed cameras by as high as 99% on some roads.

He also said that some roads had been difficult to upgrade to dual carriage way as some construction works and developments had closed up the space.

Soko also lamented that compliance with some traffic rules within the city centre operation area was worsened by the fact that some buses were owned by senior police officers.

“Most of the commuter buses in Zambia are not meant for transportation of commuters, as most except for Flash Buses are flouting regulations. These improvised buses have flourished on account of lack of parameters or bus specifications,” he said.

Soko also urged motorists to view the camera installations not as a punishment but a safety measure.

And Kankara called for the review of some speed limits on some domestic dual carriageways.

Commuter Rights Association of Zambia (CRAZ) Executive Director Aaron Kamuti petitioned RTSA through Minister of Transport to review the traffic fines.
