RTSA Fast track court convicts five motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol

THE Road Transport and Safety Agency Fast track court in Lusaka has convicted and charged five motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol.

RTSA Public Relations Manager Mukela Mangolwa disclosed in a statement issued that the traffic offences committed are contrary to Section 157 of the Road Traffic Act number 11 of 2002.

Mangolwa said Magistrate Albert Mwaba charged and fined Mr. Tembo Masha K2,500.

“Others convicted for driving under the influence of alcohol are Mr Mutale Chengo, Mr Musanji Evance, Mr Chisanga Davies, and Mr Mayamiko Kayaya, all of Lusaka,” Mangolwa said.

He said the court had convicted a total of 46 motorists out of a total of 58 cases prosecuted during the 3rd week of the month of July for various traffic offences.

“Among the leading convictions, 13 cases were for dangerous driving, 14 four expired road tax, and 5 for obstruction of road way,” he said.

“Statistics have shown that some of these offences continued to be major contributors to road traffic crashes in the country.”
Mangolwa therefore warned all motorists to observe road traffic regulations further stating that those found wanting would be prosecuted.

“The agency has called for change in the driver attitude and behaviour if the country is to record a reduction in the number of road traffic accidents,” said Mangolwa.

He also appealed to members of the public to take advantage of the call centre toll free line-983 and the whatsapp line 0965 429499 to report traffic violations.
