Road traffic accidents claim 434 lives in the third quarter of 2019, police say

POLICE say 434 people died during the third quarter of 2019 while 1,379 were seriously injured, and 2,305 people were slightly injured.
And Police have also revealed that they raised K11,568,404 in Admission of Guilt fines the same period under review.
Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo in a statement to Mwebantu said in the same period last year, 476 persons were killed.
She said 1,443 people were seriously injured the third quarter of 2018 as compared to 1,379 persons seriously serious injured in 2019 showing a decrease by 64 while 2,170 persons were slightly injured in 2018.
Meanwhile, Katongo said Lusaka Province recorded the highest number of road traffic accidents with 4,359, followed by Copperbelt with 1,263 whilst Northern Province recorded the least with 143 road traffic accidents.
She said police also raised K11, 568,404 in Admission of Guilt fines as compared to K11, 183,763 raised in the same period last year.
And Katongo attributed most of the accidents to human error with the most prevalent being: Excessive speed followed by misjudging clearance distance, failing to keep to near side.
She said other causes were cutting in, and reversing negligently.
