“RETHINK CABINET SIZE”

By Hannock Kasama- The Labour Movement and Civil Society Organisations have called on the United Party for National Development-UPND government to make a pragmatic decision on the size and composition of its impending cabinet.

The National Union for Public Service Workers has called for the appointment of a cabinet with a national outlook anchored on tribal balance.

Union General Secretary GRUCEWELL MAKONDO says the move is key to national unity.

And the Non-governmental Organisation Coordinating Council -NGOCC-says the size and composition of cabinet must not only be acceptable but also effective.

NGOCC Board Chairperson MARY MULENGA says this will ensure smooth implementation of government’s policies and programmes.

Meanwhile, the Women’s Lobby says the size of cabinet must be trimmed to reduce expenditure associated with a bloated number of government ministries.

Women’s Lobby Board Chairperson BEAUTY KATEBE says this will enable government to save resources for other competing national priorities.

On the other hand, New Life International Christian Centre President NELLY CHIKWANDA called on the UPND regime to maintain the Ministry of National Guidance and Religious Affairs.

Bishop CHIKWANDA said the Ministry of National Guidance and Religious Affairs is among other functions critical to the preservation of Zambia’s status as Christian nation.

Meanwhile Chieftainess SEKUTE of the Toka-Leya people in Kazungula district, has advised the President-elect, HAKAINDE HICHILEMA, to thoroughly screen individuals to be appointed in his cabinet.

Speaking at a media briefing at her palace in Mambova, Chieftainess SEKUTE, said Zambia needs selfless cabinet Ministers that are ready to work for the betterment of the people, as opposed to those who seek to enrich themselves.

Chieftainess SEKUTE has congratulated and wished well, President-elect and his running mate, MUTALE NALUMANGO, in their course of duty.

The traditional leader said she is confident that Mr. HICHILEMA will unite and uphold the peace that the country is known for.

Chieftainess SEKUTE has also pledged to work with the incoming government to foster development in the area.

She said the Sekute Chiefdom remains committed to working with the government of the day.
