PROTUZ Opposes Reopening Of Schools On 5th August

By Lukundo Nankamba

The Professional Teachers Union In Zambia –PROTUZ- has opposed the announcement by the government that schools will reopen on Thursday, 5th August 2021, saying it will be a threat to pupils and teachers due to the upcoming elections.

The government has announced the reopening of schools for grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 in boarding schools on Thursday 5th August 2021 and grades 9, 11, and 12 at day schools.

PROTUZ Director Public Relations Brian Mwila explains that the reopening of schools may pose a danger to school-going children and teachers because of the hostile environment caused by political violence which the country continues to witness.

He also notes that schools will be used as polling stations where many teachers have also been deployed to work as poll staff which will again disrupt learning and suggests a way forward on the matter before classes commence.

Mr. Mwila has however called for serious implementation of the Covid-19 guidelines by school management as the country is still battling with the pandemic.
