Prioritise debt crisis over Constitution Amendments – SANGWA

By Mercy Banda

Constitutional Lawyer JOHN SANGWA says the country’s debt crisis must take priority over amendment of the Constitution.

Mr. SANGWA has argued that the amendment of the constitution should not override the need to clear the country’s debt which is affecting the nation.

He says instead of spending money on the constitution amendments, the funds can be used for other national pressing issues.

Mr. SANGWA was speaking during the ongoing Law Association of Zambia -LAZ- Annual General Meeting -AGM.

He has however agreed that the national document is not perfect but that the country can survive with it as the debt crisis is more urgent.

And Attorney General MULILO KABESHA has asked the lawyers to speak with one voice on the issue.

Mr. KABESHA said it is important to also look at what led to the accumulation of the debt and appreciate that the current government has changed procedures outlawing the contracting of debt with parliament ratification.
