President HICHILEMA Counsels young people

By Ruth Chayinda

President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA has urged young people to use technology positively to acquire and share knowledge.

President HICHILEMA says it is unfortunate that young people are using technology to do things that do not build their lives and improve their well-being.

He says it is Government’s duty to provide technology but it is the children’s responsibility to use technology to benefit themselves and not use it to encourage bad practices.

The Head of State further notes that he has been informed that young people are now engaging themselves in sex parties which start on social media and later become a reality.

He has since condemned such behaviour saying it will not help them become responsible citizens.

President HICHILEMA said this during the panel discussion alongside his counterparts, Zimbabwe’s President EMMERSON MNANGAGWA, Botswana’s President MOKGWEETSI MASISI and Namibia’s Vice President NANGOLO MBUMBA.

He also bemoaned the levels of laziness among young people whom he said do not want to work hard to attain wealth but opt for corruption.

President HICHILEMA further appealed to other Heads of State to come up with a common legal requirement to protect children across the SADC region.

And President MNANGAGWA challenged children to be disciplined for them to meet their aspirations and abstain from drugs.

He said wishful thinking cannot translate into reality ad urged the young people to use technology, science and innovation to translate their aspirations into reality.

Speaking during the discussion, President MASISI said children are the best investment hence the need to continue protecting them from vices that affect their well-being and contribution.

Meanwhile Mr. MBUMBA who was representing President HAGE GEINGOB said children need to be helped to reach their full potential.

Mr. MBUMBA said all children need to be treated equally and there is need to invest in their rights.

He urged the children to be better organized and take care of themselves if they are to become better citizens and contribute to economic development in their respective countries.

The children from the four countries  have among other issues highlighted the need for their Governments to protect them from sexual abuse, child abuse and effects of climate change whilst ensuring that there is quality education.
