POLITICAL PARTY LEADERS INVITED FOR PEACE MEETING

The Coalition for peaceful elections in Zambia will on Wednesday July 14, 2021 meet leaders of all political parties to urge them to commit to peaceful elections.

The coalition which is co-convened by the Zambia Centre for Inter-party Dialogue -ZCID, Church mother bodies and other NGOs has since written to all political parties contesting the August 12 General Election, inviting them to the meeting.

This has been disclosed in Lusaka today by Commonwealth Political Officer – Governance and Peace Division – KOFFI SAWYER during an Editor’s Engagement meeting on peaceful elections in Zambia ahead of the August 12, 2021 polls.

Mr. SAWYER said the meeting should culminate into signing of The Peace Pledge by political party leaders.

He said the meeting will avail the nation an opportunity to see the commitment by leaders to peaceful elections adding that this will also try to ease political tensions.

And speaking in an interview with ZNBC News, ZCID Executive Director DOREEN NJOVU said the coalition is hopeful that the gesture to sign the peace pledge by political party leaders will put an end to political violence.

Ms. NJOVU said this is evidenced by the greeting and conversation between President EDGAR LUNGU and UPND leader HAKAINDE HICHILEMA shortly after the burial of First Republican President KENNETH KAUNDA.
