POLICE SHOOTS, WOUNDS SUSPECT

Police in Sinazongwe district, Southern Province, have shot and wounded one person suspected to be among masterminds of recent killings of suspected wizards.

The police in the district have also arrested seven suspects in connection with the killings.

Southern Province Acting Police Commissioner Alfred Nawa says the wounded suspect is admitted to Choma District Hospital.

Mr. Nawa says the suspect tried to attack police officers who went to arrest him.

He says police have made headway in their investigations and that the killings that have been going on for a while will be brought to an end.

And Southern Province Minister Cornelius Mweetwa has urged the police to bring to an end the killings in Sinazongwe District.

Mr. Mweetwa says the killings are also affecting economic activities in the district.

Meanwhile, Sinazongwe Council Chairperson Cliff Siachibweka says residents of Sinazongwe are living in fear because of the gun culture that has developed.

He says every week a murder case is recorded in the district with the last one being recorded in the last two days.
