Police Probbe ‘Mau Mau’ Existence

THE police have launched investigations into the existence of a clandestine group, Mau Mau, that has threatened to start killing Easterners living or working in Southern Province, spokesperson Esther Katongo has confirmed.

Ms Katongo said that the police have instituted investigations to ascertain the existence of the group and the genuineness of the threats by the Mau Mau.

Last week, Southern Province minister Edify Hamukale told journalists at a briefing that he had received a letter from a group calling itself “Mau Mau”, which had made five demands to the Government, failure to which it would start killing people from Eastern Province, employed or living in Southern Province.

Mr Hamukale availed a copy of the demand letter received by his office to the Daily Nation.

And Ms Katongo told the Daily Nation that the investigations would pave way for a vigorous manhunt for the group once it was ascertained they really existed.

She pointed out that the letter purported to have come from the group, threatening to kill Easterners working or living in Southern Province could have come from an individual just trying to alarm the situation.

Ms Katongo however reiterated that the police would still take the matter seriously and ensure that any unscrupulous individuals behind the threats were brought to book.

She vowed that the police would ensure that the group was hunted down or whoever was involved and behind the death threats on the Easterners to face the full wrath of the law.

“We are not sitting idle, we have been following this issue very closely and I can confirm that we have already started investigating the matter. We first of all want to find out if this group calling itself the Mau Mau really exists.

“Sometimes you find that it’s just young people doing it out of excitement but whatever the case we have to get to the root of this and we are taking it seriously. If they exist, we will hunt them down,” said Ms Katongo.
