Police nab cop harasser

Brian Mwale-Police in Lusaka have arrested one suspect in a matter where a police officer was seen being roughed up by criminals clad in political regalia in a video that went viral on social media.

The 29-year-old suspect whose name has been withheld was arrested after a report of aggravated robbery and abduction was reported at Matero Police by MBWANGA MOONGA who reported that the suspected cadres pounced on him in Chunga Compound near Nelson Mandela
School.

MOONGA says the suspects grabbed keys of his Allion motor vehicle and bundled him in the boot and drove off to Mutumbi Cemetery where they robbed him of 10-thousand kwacha and threatened to kill him if he did not give them more money.

Police Spokesperson ESTHER KATONGO says the suspects later drove MOONGA to Ngombe Compound to an Airtel booth where they ordered him to withdraw money and started beating him after the agent said they did not have cash.

She says the act attracted the attention of a lone police officer who tried to intervene but was overpowered and was locked in a nearby restaurant.

Mrs. KATONGO says the criminals are alleged to have driven their captive to Matero Township where they forced him to transfer 5-thousand kwacha to their mobile money account which he did and they let him go.

She says the suspects are alleged to have later gone on a drinking spree in Ngwerere where they are reported to have assaulted another member of the public and one of them was arrested by Ngwerere Police.

In a statement to ZNBC News in Lusaka, Mrs. KATONGO said the suspect was later identified to be one of the criminals in the video that went viral.

She said 2-thousand kwacha was recovered from the suspect while a manhunt for the other criminals involved has been launched and a docket of assault on a police officer has been opened and investigations have continued.
