Police Arrest 300 People For Post Election Violence

UPND Protests-1Police have arrested about 300 people for post election violence in opposition United Party for National Development, UPND, strongholds. The numbers perched at 296 during a press briefing could surpass the 300 mark if Western and North Western province culprits are considered.

The 296 have all been arrested in Southern province which is the hub of UPND support. The region has religiously voted UPND since the party’s formation in 1998.

At Wednesday’s press conference, police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga announced the numbers of people arrested in Southern province.

UPDATE ON SOUTHERN PROVINCE-RIOTS

Lusaka 18th August; 2016 – Political related disturbance experienced after the presidential election results in Southern Province from 15th August, 2016 and 16th August,2016.

MAZABUKA:

136 (124 men and 12 famales) suspects were apprehended, charged and arrested as follows.
122 for riotous behaviour,
9 malicious damage to property,
12 Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm.
Note: The number may be more than 136 when you count the number of offences because some suspects are facing more than one offence.

Four dockets (Arson 1, Assault on police 2 and Assault OABH, 1)
have been completed and a total member of 15 suspects appeared in court on 17/08/16 for plea.

MONZE;

50 suspects which comprised of 48 males and 02 females were apprehended, charged and arrested as follows;
24 for riotous behaviour and are appearing today whilst the 26 are being processed.

CHOMA

53 suspects were apprehended and after a screening exercise six were positively identified to have been involved in several cases of arson that took place on 15th August,2016 between 1600 and 1730hrs at various places within Choma.
47 suspects were likely charged with conduct likely to cause breach of peace

MAALA-NAMWALA:

22 suspected United Party for National Development cadres that were detained for riotous behaviour appeared in the magistrate court in Namwala for plea on 17th August,2016. They all denied the charge and the matter has been adjourned to 24th August,2016 and 26th August,2016 respectively for commencement of trial. Bail has been denied and all suspects have been remanded in prison.
Meanwhile 33 suspects have been apprehended in Maala area and are being screened.
