Opposition misconstrues Lungu’s Wise Counsel-Zambian DNA
It’s unfortunate that some opposition parties and civil societies in an alliance with media outlets hostile to Government have misconstrued President Edgar Lungu’s timely wise counsel to civil servants to earn salaries and allowances, and not plunder public resources to imply that he encourages corruption.
President Lungu in his wise counsel to civil servants used the following Bemba proverb:”Uubomba mwibala alya mwibala,”and added that do not consume the seed to detest the abuse of Government revenues by those charged with responsibilities to manage the country’s treasury and coffers.
The context in which this Bemba proverb or wise saying was coined by our ancestors is in the particular social setting: They earned their living from subsistence farming.
Indeed, this wise saying can be translated in modern times as: Source of income or means of earning a living, and not looting public resources as alleged by President Lungu’s critics.
In this case, Civil servants earn a salary for working in Government.
Therefore, President Lungu is duty-bound to advise civil servants to live a decent life by earning only salaries and allowances due to them, and discourages them from dipping fingers in the national coffers.
However, President Lungu’s critics in an alliance with media outlets hostile to Government have misconstrued the wise saying‘s meaning, and deliberately or wrongly criticized him for providing wise counsel to civil servants.
And all this is done in an attempt to mislead the nation and erode the Zambian people’s confidence in President Lungu.
Zambian DNA is alive to the fact that opposition parties are jittery because President Lungu is delivering on the campaign promises, making great strides in addressing critical national issues such as the recently re-launched, ‘KEEP ZAMBIA CLEAN’ campaign and containing the deadly cholera epidemic .
We advise opposition parties and civil societies not only to wake up from their slumber, realize that the business of lies and misinformation is short-lived, but also engage citizens on issues they fully understand than expose their ignorance.
We are appealing to President Lungu to ignore his critics’ usual business to criticize everything he does and says, and remain steadfast as he delivers an all-inclusive development agenda.
