OLDER PERSONS CELEBRATE THEIR DAY

By Patricia Banda

Government has pledged continued support to the older people in society.

Community Development Minister Kampamba Mulenga says this is because Government is aware that about 62 percent of households are headed by the elderly.

Ms Mulenga says Government has put in place programs such as Social cash and food security packs to address social basic needs of older persons.

She was speaking when officiating at the international Day of Older Persons held at the Ministry of Community Development offices, at which bags of mealie-meal and food hampers were given out.

Ms Mulenga further disclosed that she is waiting for cabinet approval to come up with a policy document that will help address challenges such as poor access to social basic needs by the elderly people.

And organising chairperson of the Day for the Elderly, Geoffrey Chiyesu thanked Government for embracing older people.

And a senior citizen who spoke on behalf of others Fackson Tembo commended Government for putting in place a provision for those over 65 years to access medical facilities at no charge.
