Officers deployed to thwart illegal mining of precious minerals

Etambuyu Katota-Government says more officers have been deployed to ensure that there is no smuggling and illegal mining of precious minerals.

Mines and Minerals Development Minister RICHARD MUSUKWA says government has noted that the mining of manganese has been characterized by illegalities hence the need to move in and stop the trend.

Mr. MUSUKWA says mineral resources contribute to national development and must be safeguarded for the common good.

He says government is also providing safe environments for mining in order to allow the sustainable use of the minerals.

Mr. MUSUKWA disclosed that gold occurrences have been confirmed in 12 Districts in the country, in Provinces which include north Western, Eastern and Lusaka.

He says gold is a strategic mineral and government has put in place measures to ensure that it benefits the country.

Mr. MUSUKWA was responding to a question raised by Serenje Member of Parliament MAXWELL KABANDA in Parliament during the questions for oral answers session.

Mr. KABANDA wanted to find what specific measures the Government is taking to harness the mining of manganese and gold to ensure that the country benefits from the resources.
