Nyirenda Accuses 2012 AFCON Winning Players Of Becoming Big Headed

According to Sun FM, Chipolopolo head coach Wedson Nyirenda has strongly condemned the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winning players of becoming bigheaded.

Nyirenda hoped that his complaint should not negatively affect his relationship with the players.

He said some players whom he did not mention became pompous just after lifting the memorable 2012 Afcon co-hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea which happened to be Zambia’s first ever and the only one so far on senior level.

On 12th February 2012 Zambia won its first ever Afcon title by beating Ivory Coast 8-7 on post match penalties after a goalless 120 minutes. That triumph happens to be the last recorded win for the Southern African nation and the last time they managed to qualify to the quarterfinals of any Afcon.

As defending champions, they failed to win any of the three matches at the following afcon in 2013 which was hosted by South Africa in which they only managed to score twice of which one was scored by goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene. That’s the tournament where drew all the matches including with 10 men Ethiopia.

At the 2015 Afcon edition in Equatorial Guinea, the Chipolopolo managed two draws and a defeat while they completely failed to qualify for the Gabon 2017 after failing to win any of the three home matches during the qualifiers.
