Lusaka (28-02-2020) – The NGOCC is demanding not only an immediate end to the gassing which has seen many innocent persons killed via mob justice but also urged the security to move fast to bring the perpetrators of the vice to book.

NGOCC board Chairperson Mary Mulenga told journalists at a media briefing on Friday morning that since the gassing began a couple of weeks ago many people have either been killed by the mob or died of gun shot from the police.
Mulenga regretted that, some of the people that met untimely death are actually innocent but happened to be at a wrong place.
According to Mulenga, the act of gassing which has provoked mob killings is not only threatening the security of the nation but is also tarnishing the image of the country whose reputation of being peaceful is unquestionable.
Mulenga observed that people carrying out the criminal activitivities strange to Zambia are well resourced and coordinated.
In the midst of these strange happening in a once upon a time peaceful country, president Edgar Lungu is silent.”
She said the silence of the police and the Head of  State has contributed to the high anxiety in the people that feel distressed by the killing of their loved ones.
“We are aware of the briefing by the Inspectoe General of Police about the strange happening in the country where he announced that the total number of people killed are 43”
She added that the Minister of Home Affairs also told the nation that the number of people killed has risen to 46.
But what the people want to hear is the assurance from the president stating the measures his government has put in place to protect them.
She said the current systematic killing is equal to crimes against humanity and must be stopped.
She said the government has a duty to ensure that the people are protected and must allocate enough funds to the police to investigate the crime and arrest the masterminders of this heinous crime.
She said that it was not a good idea for the government to let the people speculate.
Mulenga said the systematic mob killing is equal to crimes against humanity which government must endeavour to stop without delay
She said the situation is so grave to be left to guessing because any misinformation can lead to what is already happening in the country.
She also said the women Movement is extremely worried over the accusation and counter accusations among politicians over the current gassing saying this is fuelling the tension which is already high from the 2016 elections.
She advised the political leaders to exercise responsibility and find a solution to the people.
Further Mulenga advised the government to counsel the Army officers deployed in communities to act professionally.
She said there is no need for soldiers to harass the already stressed people.
She said as a result of the killings, the people are living in fear in their own country.
