NGOCC BEMOANS NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE

By Sharon Kunda-

The Non-Governmental Gender Organization Coordinating Council -NGOCC- has bemoaned the negative effects of climate change against women and girls.

NGOCC Executive Director ANNE ANAMELA says household energy utilization in Zambia is still largely dependent on firewood particularly in rural areas.

Mrs. ANAMELA says as the main providers of energy for the household, women supply 70 percent of the total amount of energy consumed in the nation, which makes them suffer more from poverty than men.

She said this during a training of representatives from members’ organizations in Climate Change Mitigation and Resilience, a programme sponsored by the European Union.

Mrs. ANAMELA expressed happiness that Government has created the Ministry of Green Economy to address issues of climate change.

She said one of the important policies that Government has put in place is the Zambia National Policy on climate change which is a cross-sectoral policy enacted in 2016 and provides a framework for coordinating climate change programmes in order to ensure c
imate resilience.
