NAREP Blames Council, PF for Cholera Outbreak

Natalie Ngosa reports that NAREP has blamed the Lusaka City Council and the PF government for the cholera outbreak in the country. National Restoration Party (NAREP) secretary general Ezra Ngulube said yesterday that it was indisputable that the PF government had failed Zambians.

“As National Restoration Party, we strongly believe that the Lusaka City Council with their counterpart the Patriotic Front government are fully responsible for the further spread of cholera in Lusaka and in Zambia because what has been happening in the past whenever someone was applying for trading space in the market or bus station, the council would always say ‘we don’t have trading space’. They would always refer you to the next office near them which is the office of the PF cadres who have been able to give traders space to trade in places that are not conducive. These are places that do not have supporting infrastructure such as toilets and running water. This has led to people trading on top of drainages, people building makeshift shops on top of drainages and people trading all over the streets of Lusaka,” Ngulube said.

“They are there the whole day from 06:00 hours to 18:00 hours, without proper sanitation such as toilets and running water. Whenever they feel like answering the call of nature, where do you think they will go? Ku bomfya ifikopo fya sheki sheki (they use opaque beer packs) like the case right now in Lusaka. At the end of it all, the cholera that has come, we are not being proactive but we are being reactive.”

Ngulube said what was happening in Zambia was unacceptable and that Zambians should rise to the occasion and demand decent jobs, proper business environment and say no to street vending.
