NAC Disappointed With Clergy’s Call To Ban Distribution Of Condoms During Public Events

By Correspondent

The National AIDS Council –NAC- is disappointed with a call by Copperbelt based pastors to ban the distribution of condoms during public events citing high immoral activities.

NAC Communication Manager, Justine Mwiinga said it is unfortunate that same respected clergymen in Kitwe are calling for the ban of condom distribution when they have 90 percent success rate in the prevention of HIV/AIDS when used correctly.

Mr. Mwiinga said condoms programming in the country has been ranked as the highest intervention in averting new HIV infections along with antiretroviral therapy in patients with HIV.

He has noted that the need for the faith movement to draw a line between science and religion especially in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Yesterday, Kitwe District Pastor’s Fellowship Chairperson Raddy Lewila called on relevant authorities to stop the distribution of condoms during public events like expos and traditional ceremonies because they promote immorality in a Christian nation like Zambia.

His comment follows calls made by Southern Province Minister, Edify Hamukale last week during the southern province expo for distribution of more condoms.
