Mwense Gets Tough on Fishing

Mwense District Commissioner Geoffrey Chipampata has directed the department of fisheries to intensify patrols to curb illegal fishing during the fish ban period in the district.Mr. Chipampata has told ZANIS that there are reports that some of people are fishing illegally on the Luapula River hence the need for the department to intensify patrols.He said government through the Ministry of Fisheries released funds for officers to be mobile and curb fishing during the fish ban period.Mr. Chipampata has cautioned illegal fishers to refrain from the practice and said those who will be found wanting, will be prosecuted.He advised people to instead concentrate on farming as opposed to fishing illegally adding that if the tendency continues fish may be depleted in the Luapula River.Mr. Chipampata said though no one has been arrested so far, the department has however confiscated some fishing nets and other fishing utensils allegedly to have been used by illegal fishers.
