Authorities in Mumbwa district, Central province, has seized canoes and fishing nets from some fishermen found illegally engaging in fishing on the Kafue river.
District Fisheries Officer, Emmanuel Chileshe has confirmed the seizure to ZANIS, in an interview.
Dr Chileshe has further described the confiscated nets as the wrong type.
He has warned that the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock will continue confiscating any illegal fishing gears, in order to avoid depleting the fish in the Kafue river.
Dr Chileshe says though there are many issues surrounding fishing in the Kafue river, his ministry will implement the Fisheries Act accordingly.
He has also urged fishermen to adhere to the annual ban on fishing, which starts every December 1 and ends at the month-end of February the following year.
