Mtine welcomes HH’s stance on markets, bus stations

Brian Mwale-Zambia’s first indigenous mayor, TOM MTINE has applauded President – elect, HAKAINDE HICHILEMA’s stance to allow local authorities take over the operations of markets and bus stations.

Mr. MTINE says running of markets and bus stations should remain a preserve of local authorities because they know better how to run them, unlike leaving it to political party cadres whose interest is to fatten their pockets.

The 95-year-old former Mayor said this from his Lupili residence in Ndola.

He said local government is an important sector of every country for sustainable social and economic development.

Mr. MTINE said local authorities should be given chance to operate freely if meaningful development is to be attained.

He further called on Mr. HICHILEMA not to allow cadres to go back into the markets.

Mr. MTINE was however quick to mention that officers in the local authorities should ensure that the funds collected from markets and bus stations be put to good use.

He also called on the President elect to revamp industries in various parts of the country as was the case in the 1980s.

Mr. MTINE observed that it is saddening that there is a steady rise in population while industries remain non-functional, a situation he described will not help to create the much needed jobs.
