More Stakeholders Call For Increased Budgetary Allocation To Agriculture Sector In 2022

By Balewa Zyuulu

Stakeholders have urged the government through the ministry of finance to prioritize agriculture by increasing budgetary allocation in the 2022 national budget.

In recent years, trends in the budget allocation to the agricultural sector had been going down and the allocation to the agricultural sector in 2020 was lowest at 3.7% of the total budget with a slight increase of 6.7% in the 2021 budget.

Speaking during Tuesday’s edition of let the people talk programme on phoenix FM this morning, ActionAid Zambia governance programmes coordinator Geoffrey Sinzala said increased allocation to the sector will ensure improved service delivery, especially for extension services.

On the same programme, Rural Women Assembly in Zambia Representative Susan Chilala said low funding towards agriculture has been a major hindrance to the growth of the sector especially small scale farmers in the country.

And East and Southern Africa Small Scale Farmer’s Forum National Coordinator Henry Singili says agriculture is key to spur social-economic development hence the need for increased budgetary allocation to the sector.
