MOPANI COPPER MINES COMMENCES PAYMENTS TO OVER 450 LOCAL MINE SUPPLIERS AND CONTRACTORS

By Michael Kaluba

Mopani Copper Mines PLC has finally commenced making payments to over 450 local mine suppliers and contractors that the mine owed money after a delay stretching a few months despite initially requiring payment within 30 days.

In response to a Phoenix News press query, Mopani Copper Mines Public Relations Manager Nebert Mulenga acknowledged that the mine has a backlog of payments to suppliers and contractors, which it is actively working on resolving.

Mr. Mulenga who declined to disclose the full amounts owed to the local contractors and suppliers said the mine has continued engaging all the affected businesses as key stakeholders and partners and that further details would only be provided in due course.

And Association of Mine Suppliers and Contractors President Costa Mwaba has confirmed that some of the 450 members have begun receiving their payments after delays beyond 3 months for some whose initial payments were due within 30 days.

Mr. Mwaba, who last month complained about Mopani’s delay to pay suppliers and contractors on time, however states that his members have all declined to make the amounts owed to them public and have instead chosen to exercise confidentiality.
