MONGU CHIEFS DEMAND SUSPENSION OF TIMBER LICENSES

By Matha Banda

Some traditional leaders in Mongu, Western Province have appealed to the government to consider suspending timber licenses issued to dealers in the province.

The traditional leaders made the appeal when Green Economy and Environment Minister COLLINS NZOVU paid a courtesy call on the LITUNGA, the highest traditional leader of the Lozi people.

They say the suspension will allow the government to control the cutting of tress which is being done with impunity by some timber dealers.

The traditional leaders complained that the rate at which trees are being cut will have devastating impact in the province that has not been spared by effects of Climate Change.

And the Minister said government will come up with measures to regulate timber merchants and saw millers.

Mr. NZOVU said government will also implement the key forest development fund to address most issues in the sector.
