M’membe Charged With Criminal Trespass, Released

M'membe, wife, MwendaPost editor-in-chief Fred M’membe and his deputy managing editor Joseph Mwenda have been released on a K10, 000 police bond after being slapped with charges of criminal trespasses and uttering false documents.

M’membe, his wife and Mwenda were arrested in the wee hours of Tuesday following a confrontation with police at The Post premises on Bwinjifumu Road in Lusaka.

The trio had gone to access the company premises after a Tax Tribunal issued an order restraining police and the Zambia Revenue Authority from possessing property and locking out the company premises.

Police sources say M’membe’s action was illegal while the tribunal ex parte order was illegally obtained.

A Supreme Court decision ordered The Post to pay about US $6.1 million in unremtted taxes. The newspaper argues the figures are in dispute and says its all political persecution.
