Mine Unions welcome govt stance on mopani

By Lilian Kalaba-Mine unions on the Copperbelt have hailed the bold stance taken by Government to object to Mopani Copper Mines decision to place the mines in Kitwe and Mufulira under care and maintenance. The National union of miners and allied workers President James Chansa says all the mine unions on the copperbelt will rally with government to defend the 11 000 employees at  Mopani copper mines.Mr. Chansa says Mopani copper mine is not sincere with government because the reasons advanced by the mining company are not genuine especially that they have just developed new shafts in Kitwe and Mufulira. He wondered how a mine which has sunk new shafts at Mufulira at a cost  off 295 million US dollars to extend the life span of the mine to twenty five years would want to go under.Mr. Chansa urged Mopani who are currently  running with the World class synclinorium shaft in Kitwe which has given the mine access to 115 million tonnes of copper ore and created over 600 jobs to immediately rescind their decision.Minister of Mines Richard Musukwa has said that government will not accept an attempt by the company to use the covid 19 pandemic as ascapegoat to push an agenda to lay off people without lawful justification.
