Millers Predict Drastic Decrease In Mealie-Meal Prices

By Michael Kaluba

The Millers Association of Zambia -MAZ- has predicted a continued and drastic downward adjustment in mealie-meal prices on the local market in the coming months citing the anticipated bumper harvest, the export program and availability of seasonal foods on the market.

And an initial assessment conducted by the association has shown an increase in both production and sales for mealie meal from 60 percent to around 80 percent following the recently lifted ban on the export of maize and by-products.

Association President Andrew Chintala however reveals that domestic demand for Zambia’s staple food remains low and attributes this to the existing seasonal foods on the local market which have given consumers options against buying mealie-meal and its by-products.

He says the association has since proposed that exports of at least 25 percent of the mealie meal produced by millers as recently pronounced by the government remain allowable beyond the impending announcement of the crop forecast survey due in a fortnight.
