MET UPGRADING STATIONS

ZMD means – Zambia Meteorological Department

The Zambia Meteorological Department -MET is upgrading observation stations across the country to improve climatic service delivery.
Meteorological Department Acting Director Edson Nkonde says the institution is introducing automated stations in place of manual ones.
He says this is to enhance the accuracy of the information provided to various sectors of the economy such as agriculture, health and energy.
Mr. Nkonde said this in an interview with ZNBC News in Lusaka.
He disclosed that the weather stations across the country have since been modernised and increased from 41 to 81.
Mr. Nkonde further said by 2024 every district should have observation infrastructure like rainfall stations in each agricultural camp to enhance reliability of weather records.
He also said meteorological staff will be sponsored to study for short courses with the help of cooperating partners so that they are equipped to understand the climate better and enhance efficiency.
Mr. Nkonde also announced that a weather radar will soon be set up in the country to improve the observation of weather.
