Measles breaksout in Chasefu

Chasefu District in Eastern province has been hit by an outbreak of measles.

The district has recorded 33 suspected cases of the disease.

Chasefu District Surveillance Officer, JACOB BANDA says eight of the eleven samples collected were taken to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka for examination, and four samples tested positive for measles.

Speaking during the Epidemic Preparedness Meeting at Emusa Day Secondary School, Mr BANDA explained that two positive tests out of five suspected cases of measles confirm the outbreak.

He said the first case was recorded in March at Lusuntha Rural Health center and there has been an increase in cases since then.

Mr BANDA, further disclosed that an outbreak of rash in Phikamalaza, was also recorded but has not yet been classified as measles.

Meanwhile, Chasefu District Health Director, AARON MWANGO said his office plans to engage Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI) to help contain the outbreak.
