Zambia’s former 400-meter former World champion SAMUEL MATETE has advised Zambians to take sports as a business.

MATETE says the industry has the potential to reduce the unemployment levels in the country if well managed.

MATETE, who is also the first Zambian to achieve a world record in athletics, said there is a need therefore to start promoting sports in schools and allow learners to explore their natural talents at an early stage.

He said this when he participated at the fundraising fun run for Mpongwe’s Ibenga girls secondary school organised by the school alumni at Raven Country club in Kitwe.

The former athlete emphasized that sports has now become a lucrative industry which can absorb many youths that can contribute positively to the growth of the country’s economy.

Meanwhile, Ibenga girl’s fun run fundraising Chairperson MWAKA SILUONDE thanked MATETE for the significant support rendered.

Dr. SILUONDE, who is also a former Ibenga girls pupil, said the initiative is meant to raise 1.2 million kwacha for the construction of an ultra-modern Kitchen for their former school which is in a dilapidated state.

And Ibenga girl’s secondary school Headteacher Sister ESTELLA KASONDE commended the school Alumni for their consistency in organising sporting activities aimed at uplifting the status of the school.

Sr. KASONDE said once successful, the kitchen will help improve efficiency and hygiene standards for the school kitchen.
