Man United Beat Tottenham

(BBC)Marcus Rashford scored twice as Manchester United condemned former manager Jose Mourinho to defeat on his return to Old Trafford and ended Tottenham’s three-match winning streak under the Portuguese.Rashford beat Tottenham keeper Paulo Gazzaniga at his near post after six minutes after the ball had broken to the England forward off Davinson Sanchez. Then, after a long wait for a VAR check, Rashford kept his nerve to convert a penalty four minutes after the break, once it had been ruled the striker had been fouled by Moussa Sissoko.Dele Alli had equalised with a brilliant goal at the end of the first half but United were good value for their victory after creating a number of excellent chances they failed to take.Rashford was unable to become the first United player to score a league hat-trick since Robin van Persie’s memorable effort against Aston Villa in 2013 but he now has 12 goals in 13 games for club and country, and his nine Premier League goals leave him one short of his season best.Liverpool 5-2 EvertonEverton manager Marco Silva faces the sack, with the club’s board expected to decide his future on Thursday – and former boss David Moyes under consideration as an interim replacement.Silva has already survived one round of emergency talks among the club’s hierarchy after the home loss to Norwich City on 23 November but it is increasingly unlikely he will be spared a second time after the humiliating 5-2 thrashing in the Merseyside derby at Anfield left Everton in the relegation zone. The 42-year-old Portuguese was asked about his future in the aftermath of Everton’s eighth defeat in 11 games and said: “I am not the right person to talk about this situation. You are asking me and I don’t have the answer.”The answer may be delivered on Thursday, with Silva increasingly unlikely to be in charge for Saturday’s game against Chelsea at Goodison Park.If he goes, and in the unlikely event Everton announce a long-term replacement, 56-year-old Scot Moyes is in the frame to return, after being discussed behind the scenes at Goodison Park as a temporary solution.Chelsea 2-1 Aston VillaChelsea manager Frank Lampard praised striker Tammy Abraham’s growing influence as the Blues rediscovered their winning touch against Aston Villa.Abraham reinforced his importance to Lampard’s side, scoring the opener and setting up the second on his return from injury in Chelsea’s 2-1 Premier League victory at Stamford Bridge. The 22-year-old England international missed the Blues’ home defeat by West Ham with a hip injury and put them ahead against Villa with a firm header from Reece James’ cross. After Villa equalised against the run of play when Trezeguet bundled in, Chelsea regained the lead shortly after the restart when Abraham neatly chested Willian’s cross into the path of Mason Mount who thumped home a volley.“Tammy is a personality that’s growing in our dressing room every day with his enthusiasm and his will to win,” said Lampard.“He is a striker that’s near the top of the goalscoring charts in the league, he’s showing his all-round game, stretches defences and he starts our press.“And of course if a player’s on such a good run it’s normal that if they go out of the team that you can miss them, and he came straight back in as he left off.”Chelsea, like they did in the first half before Trezeguet’s leveller, dominated possession and territory as they looked to increase their advantage.Abraham twice came close to adding a third against the club he helped fire to promotion last season, while Willian – one of Chelsea’s other star performers – hit the post with an exquisite free-kick.The Blues ended a run of back-to-back defeats with a victory which helps them consolidate fourth place, moving them six points clear of nearest rivals Wolves, while narrowing the gap on third-placed Manchester City to three points.Villa, who have won just once on the road this season, remain in 15th place, a point above the relegation zone after Southampton’s win.Leicester 2-0 WatfordJamie Vardy and James Maddison scored as Leicester beat bottom-club Watford to climb back to second in the Premier League. After a goalless first half, Vardy fired the hosts ahead from the penalty spot after Adam Masina had fouled Jonny Evans.Maddison then made sure of the win in stoppage time, breaking away before slipping the ball past Ben Foster in the Watford goal. The win moved Leicester back above Manchester City into second place, eight points behind leaders Liverpool who hammered Everton 5-2.It was also Leicester’s seventh consecutive top-flight win, equalling a club record that was set in March 1963 and surpassing any run they were able to manage in their title-winning season in 2015-16.Defeat, meanwhile, leaves managerless Watford bottom of the table and they are now seven points adrift of safety after Southampton beat Norwich to move out of the relegation zone. The Hornets did not manage a shot on target at the King Power Stadium until the 90th minute when Domingos Quina hit a tame effort at Kasper Schmeichel as the visitors slumped to a ninth defeat in 15 games.
