Lusaka Youth gets 1 year Jail Term for Stealing 2 Bibles From Pick n Pay

A LUSAKA youth has been convicted and sentenced to a year imprisonment with hard labour for stealing two Bibles valued at K479 from Pick n Pay.
Jeff Chiyoya, 22, of Misisi compound was charged with theft contrary to the Laws of Zambia.
When the matter came up for plea before magistrate Rachael Mwansa, Chiyoya admitted having stolen the Bibles from a Pick n Pay Store in Makeni.
When asked what he wanted to do with the bibles, Chiyoya said his aim was to sell them.
“So from everything in the shop you decided to steal the word of God?” magistrate Mwansa asked as the accused responded in the affirmative.
Facts before court were that Chiyoya stole the two bibles from the shelves and put them in his bomber jacket and that he was observed on the CCTV camera.
Upon his own admission of guilt, the court convicted the remoserful Chiyoya.

In mitigation, the convict pleaded for leniency, saying he will never repeat the offence.
Magistrate Mwansa in sentencing the convict said she considered his mitigation but also expressed disappointment over his decision to steal bibles.
She explained that the offence of theft was a felony, which attracted a maximum sentence of five years.
Magistrate Mwansa then sentenced Chiyoya to one year imprisonment with hard labour.
